70th Anniversary Walks

22nd October, 2006, was a very important day in the Club's history.  It was HRC's 70th anniversary and was celebrated in style, with four walks in the area of Great Alms Cliff, the site of the Club's very first walk.  The day had a firm "70" theme: all 4 leaders - Eric Taylor, Roger Bibby, Molly Askew and Daphne Fisher- are in their 70s, and more than 70 members (more than 80, in fact) took part in walks adding up to a total distance of 70 kilometres.  Finally, a big cake with a 70th anniversary logo was the centrepiece of a delicious tea in Almscliff Village Hall.

The idea of forming a rambling club was born in Bradley's Café in Station Parade in October 1936. The first walk ever was from the Harlow Hotel (now the Shepherd's Dog pub) to Almscliff Crag; that first route was one of the ones retraced 70 years later.  Little did Edna Swires realise, when she suggested the first walk in 1936, that by 2006 the membership would have grown from 36 to nearly 460.

The sight of so many walkers streaming across the countryside from Almscliff Crag to Huby village was enough to make animals and onlookers alike stare in wonder. And to the walkers themselves the event was a reminder of everything the Club represents - physical challenge, exploring the unknown and making life-long friends.
